The Johnny Mac Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed by John’s wife, Jennifer after his death in August 2009 of 9/11 related cancer. John was an FDNY Firefighter and caring for others was what he did. In a list of final wishes, John asked to have a community center built in Blue Point, NY. In accord with John’s motto “whatever it takes,” the Foundation now works tirelessly to fulfill that wish. In addition, the Foundation supports other 9/11 first responder organizations. John’s last wishes were written down and electronically scanned.
Located at the Bayport-Blue Point Library, the John McNamara Teen Center is a vibrant space designed to empower the youth of our community while honoring the memory of a true hero. Named after FDNY firefighter John McNamara, who tragically passed away from 9/11-related cancer, this center was established in fulfillment of his last wish: to create a place where local teens could thrive in a positive, supportive environment.
John McNamara’s wife, Jennifer McNamara, inspired by her husband’s love for youth programs, worked tirelessly to establish the Johnny Mac Foundation. Her dedication brought John’s wish for a community teen center to life, transforming a vision into a reality. The Teen Center is a testament to his enduring legacy and commitment to the next generation. It provides an invaluable space where teenagers can gather, learn, and grow together.
The Teen Center is carefully curated to meet the needs and interests of today’s youth. It is equipped with the latest young adult book collections, including mandatory and recommended reading from local schools. The space offers more than just books—it’s a hub for creativity, learning, and fun.
The Johnny Mac Foundation is proud to support the Bayport-Blue Point Library and the Teen Center’s creation. The foundation’s headquarters is located on the library premises, making it an integral part of the community it serves. Jennifer McNamara, together with her son Jack, is a frequent presence at the center, ensuring that John’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
“We needed to address a service gap for our teen patrons,” says Mike Firestone, Director of the Bayport-Blue Point Library. The Teen Center fulfills that need, offering a modern and engaging space that caters to the diverse interests of local teens. The library has carefully crafted a space that evolves with the changing needs of the community, ensuring that teens have a place of their own to explore, learn, and create.
